Medicine Wheels

The Medicine Wheel has many symbols and can be an excellent tool for meditation.

The Circle stands for the circle of life, the cycle of the seasons, the roundness of the earth and planets, the total universe.

The colors, yellow, red, black and white, represent the four races of the same human family, all of us brothers and sisters, living on our Mother Earth.

Yellow represents the East, the ever rising Sun, new beginnings, the element Fire, the Eagle, the season of Spring, our childhood, and the Spiritual Self.

Red represents the South, energy, growth, the element Water, the Coyote, the season of Summer, our adolescence, and the Emotional Self.

Black represents the West, strength, self-examination, the element Earth, the Bear, the season of Autumn, our adulthood, and the Physical Self.

White represents the North, clarification of our intent, concentration, the element Air, the Buffalo, the season of Winter, the wisdom of elders, and the Intellectual Self.

Green at the center of the wheel represents the Creator, Mother Nature, the soul, or your higher self.

A study of the Medicine Wheel can help us understand that everything in life is connected to everything else, that we can work to create a healthy balance in our own lives and perhaps, eventually, harmony in the world.

The above nformation taken loosely from The Medicine Way by Kenneth Meadows, 1990, and The Medicine Wheel: Understanding Problem Patients in Primary Care, by Louis T. Montour, M.D., 1996.
